Avian The Dragonrider Chronicles Book 2 eBook Nicole Conway Reviews
I really like this series and this story. To all of the new authors who are writing (thank you and keep up the good work), but you should look at this writing as an example to follow. There is none of the back and forth decision making for 200 pages here! Love it!
I hope she continues to conclude the story, I enjoy reading it and just wished the books were released faster.
It is not in the same category (to me) as Terry Mancour (last book of his, Enchanter, notwithstanding) but it is very good. The great thing to me, is that she has the ability to get better, if she continues to not have any negatives about her writing style, etc, then she can focus on the plot and characters, etc. Keep it up please!
For heaven’s sake, get this author a decent proofreader and editor! What could have been a 5-star series was ruined by glaring spelling and grammar errors. I don’t know if it’s just the editions, but it was extremely frustrating to constantly come across errors no sixth-grader should make, let alone someone who is a professional writer.
I'm a little conflicted on how I feel about his sudden growth and there are still a few editing issues, but damn. It's still incredible and I still love it! Also, his powers are pretty cool, but I like that he's got some blowback when using them. After all, it would be just a touch too convenient if he was suddenly able to do everything he wanted without any real consequences whatsoever. And I'm not talking about the social stigma consequences, I'm talking about actual physical consequences of him essentially dropping every time he uses too much power to do something like healing. I like that.
READ THIS BOOK!!! Okay, so I read loved the first book so much that I bought the second book immediately after and loved it just as much as the first story. Nicole describes the setting and characters so well, it places you right in the story. As I stated on the first book review, I hadn't much cared for elves and dragons before I read this series. Now I want to read more books with them, more importantly, I want more of Jaevid (the half-breed elf/human) and his dragon Mavrik. This book led me in places I didn't expect, especially the ending when Nicole unfolds what Jaevid's father had done (I won't spoil it for any one tho). Again, I couldn't wat to read the next book and bought the third in this trilogy TRAITOR. Oh my gosh, I binge read these stories! Yes, I loved them that much!
I usually don.t put much thought into these reviews, because I rarely have anything really negative to say about the books I read. If there is something I read that I find not to my liking, I usually quit reading, and never get this far. That being said, this book is well written and Mrs. Conway is very talented, but there's a part in the book that made me not want to recommend this book to my niece who also likes to read these types of books. So, for any parent or uncle, as is my case, who thinks this might be an interesting story for the youth of their family (twelve to tween age), I would strongly recommend you. Read through this entire book before you decide whether to allow your child to read it. That's good advice for anything your child may be reading as well.
This story is great on many levels. It is told by the hero of the book a half-breed human elf named Jae. As a half-breed neither race will accept him. He grows up very lonely but not bitter. He basically deals with what life deals out to him. He was sent to live with his father and half siblings and Step Mother who were less than welcoming to him. Everything changes in his life when he and a wild Dragon team up. He suddenly finds himself enrolled in the elite Dragonrider military academy. He finds friends and discovers new aspects of himself. He learns that he can not only communicate with his Dragon but other dragons, and animals as well. Yet Jae seems to get into trouble at every turn, but manages to do the right thing, even if it is hard. The Second Book Avian is just as good. It explores Jae's past and his relationship or lack of one with his family, particularly his father who only took him in as duty dictated it. Despite his "family" packing up and moving without telling him Jae takes on the challenge of keeping house and dragon by himself. He discovers unexpected talents. By the end of this second book Jae joins the ranks of his fellow Avians to swear fealty to the King. However, Jae's nightmares leave him anxious about pledging himself. There is so much more to these books that are full of fun, resourceful characters and in sight on what family is. I tried to avoid spoilers. I am eagerly awaiting the next novel in this saga.
A solid second book to the series that makes the first book feel almost like a prologue. The story itself grabs you quickly in the pacing keeps the story and stressing with each chapter packed full. Where the first book felt like it was aimed towards a younger crowd this one does feel more like a young adult novel.
Outside of one instance In which I feel there was a point of view era nothing really took me out of the story.
Again the book that's feel like it's bumped up in age but that makes sense given that the protagonist is 17. While the language is still fairly clean there is an uptick in the action which is great for those of us who love swords and fantasy.
I re-read this book this week, along with its predecessor "Fledgling". I highly enjoyed this second book in the series. This was a "break" book for me, in between the books I review on Love Bytes Reviews, and it worked perfect. It isn't heavy. It is a feel good fantasy with a couple spots that might not feel as good, but overall a fun, fast read. I've got the third book "Traitor" to read as well so I'll be continuing the story. I highly recommend this series for the teens and young adults it is written for, and also for anyone like me that likes a fast fun fantasy read without a lot of angst!
