The Book of Wonder is the seventh book and fifth original short story collection of Irish fantasy writer Lord Dunsany, considered a major influence on the work of J. R. R. Tolkien, H. P. Lovecraft, Ursula LeGuin and others. It was first published in hardcover by William Heinemann in November, 1912, and has been reprinted a number of times since. Lord Dunsany - The Book of Wonder Lord Dunsany 9781539952077 Books Reviews

This is the first volume of Dunsany I have read, and it offers tight, quick reads of elaborate dreamscapes. The endings of the stories seem abrupt...until you find yourself thinking about them, creating your own scenarios in the settings created by the author. His influence on Lovecraft and Token is apparent, although I'll give Dunsany the edge in ability to create imaginative created worlds (as hyperbolic as that sounds to the uninitiated). A must-read, and a steal as it's a public domain book.
You really need to read this. It is the basis for a LOT of fantasy. It is easily the equal of JRR Tolkien in influence on the field but far more fun.
Whenever I want to remember how to write, I read Lord Dunsany. His words roll off the tongue when read aloud, which almost feels like singing. The stories bring to vivid life fantastical creatures and places in a way that make everything in other books seem to be mere shadows.
These are great books. They are fun to read.
I've always enjoyed Lord Dunsany's works.
These stories by Lord Dunsany are very funny fairy tales that have influenced everyone from HP Lovecraft to Tolkien and C S Lewis. The excellent "How Nuth practiced his art upon the Gnoles" is a weird fantasy classic and well worth the dollar thew charge for this edition. This is the best of the kindle versions because it is formatted with chapter links etc. Well recommended.
Often spectacularly beautiful writing, contained within stories sprung from the remarkable imagination of Dunsany, who probably could have been characterized as a renaissance man, whereas the reader might be inclined to speculate that such an imagination must have belonged to a reclusive, psychologically disturbed individual. Not all the stories are equally impressive and appealing, but some are indeed spectacular, and the collection is well worth reading in order to sift out the stories and the lines you like, so that you can mark them to read again, or to read out loud to someone else.

I continue delving into the short weird fiction of Lord Dunsany with the Book of Wonder, which seems to mostly concern fantasy and weird fiction crossovers between the dream worlds of Dunsany (which influenced Lovecraft's Dreamlands heavily) and the waking world of the author. Hence, many characters know both London and the fantastic realms of Dunsany's imagination. The imaginative fiction had clear influences on D&D as part of Appendix N (e.g., the gnolls, originally "gnoles," first appeared in one of these stories - the 2017 Free RPG Day offering for Dungeon Crawl Classics featured an homage to these origins, the short module "Gnole House") and other authors (particularly H.P. Lovecraft, of course). Great stuff.
