I bought this expecting something like a V. I. Mystery. I'm surprised but not at all disappointed! This plot is engaging and the character development is rich and Complex. It is significantly longer than her other mysteries. I was so involved with the story, I felt annoyed when people interrupted my reading. There is even a provocative element to the characters that invited me to think more deeply about my own life's priorities.Tags : Ghost Country: A Novel [Sara Paretsky] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Like new condition. Great price.
This book was not what I expected and I did not enjoy it as well as others by this same author.
Not up to her usual. The characters were cardboard thin and I felt that the social issue of homelessness to be more complex. However, Paretsky's heart is always right where it should be.
Didn't care all that much for the setting and the story. Was disappointed with Sara Paretsky. Felt I wasted my money.
OK
What a dreadful read! Characters had no credibility - doctors didn't act like doctors, lawyers didn't act like lawyers, church people didn't act like church people, police didn't act like police, and crazy people didn't even act like crazy people. The Moe-Joe-Curly antics were tedious and dull. I wouldn't have finished it except that it's my book group read . . . I feel sorry for my friends who are slogging through it right now.
i started to read this book because i have enjoyed other books by the author (and because my husband didn't like it by the end of the first chapter). it is difficult to 'get into the story'. in a strange way though, i felt compelled to continue reading it and find out what happens in tne end (which was anticlimatic in my opinion). i couldn't help but wonder what characters in the book reflect those of the author, as indeed, those of use who read alot know that the author's personality and some traits are reflected in their characters. in comparing it to john grishams novel 'the street lawyer' both authors are trying to present the plight of the homeless but i believe that grisham made a greater contribution in that a solution of sorts was presented. this is one weird story.
